General Assembly gets acquired. It's The Daily Crunch.

Adecco acquires General Assembly, Russia blocks Telegram and Elon Musk has more crazy-sounding ideas. (Listen, I'm not the one calling them crazy.) All that and more in The Daily Crunch April 16, 2018.

1. New York's programming ed tech startup, General Assembly, sells to Adecco for $413M

That's a lot of money — but it's not the exit that many in the New York tech ecosystem had hoped for, especially since the company's most recent funding round reportedly valued it at $440 million.

Meanwhile, European HR services company Adecco seems to be increasingly interested in tech. It acquired recruiting marketplace Vettery for $100 million earlier this year.

2. Russia starts blocking Telegram for failing to turn over encryption keys

According to several reports, Telegram is still operational in the country. However, several service providers have started blocking the company's website.

3. U.S. companies banned from selling components to ZTE

A year ago, Chinese electronics giant ZTE pled guilty to violating sanctions on Iran and North Korea. As part of the initial agreement, ZTE was allowed to continue to work with U.S. companies, but the Department of Commerce now contends that ZTE failed to significantly penalize senior employees.

4. Elon Musk's latest SpaceX idea involves a party balloon and bounce house

He began his musings on Twitter by saying, "This is gonna sound crazy, but ..."

5. Car-sharing startup Turo raises additional $12M

Turo has unveiled a new program called Commercial Host, which will enable independent car rental businesses to offer their cars via Turo.

6. UK report urges action to combat AI bias

The report says we need diverse development teams and truly representational data-sets to avoid biases being baked into AI algorithms.

Josh Constine discusses the possibility of Facebook launching a paid, ad-free tier.
